UC Admissions Wrap-Up

Three Fall 2020 admissions trends were evident across the board at The University of California Counselor Conference:

  1. Waitlists are being utilized to keep acceptances under the desired true enrollment numbers so the UCs do not face over-enrollment.
  2. The ELC (Eligibility in the Local Context) and Statewide Guarantee programs are going to become harder to manage as the smaller campuses like UC Merced become more of a draw for direct applicants.
  3. The ‘quality’ of students in terms of GPA and test scores is rising at all of the UC campuses making each campus all the more selective for admissions.

What does this mean for Fall 2020 Applicants?

  1. Students may be faced with being placed on a waitlist and having to accept another offer of admission while awaiting the UC waitlist decision after May 1st.
  2. The ELC/Statewide Guarantee may not grant a student admission to ANY of the UC campuses since the programs are based on space availability.
  3. In a sea of great applicants, what makes an individual stand out? If exceptional grades and top test scores do not guarantee a spot, what does?

Looking at the numbers for the Fall 2019 applicants, admits, and the waitlist show a changing landscape within the UC system. Students who are considering applying to a UC whether it be for Fall 2020 or beyond can benefit from expert guidance in making their applications rise to the top. The entire UC application is based on 14 factors – getting an application to stand out beyond the grades and test scores is the key. This is where the true decisions are being made by admissions officers.
