We are excited to announce that the Microsoft Store in South Coast Plaza is offering a “Leadership, Empowerment, and Volunteerism” workshop for students 9+. The event is offered on several dates during the month of August and is a great opportunity to show students how to research and support causes they care about.
College4Careers is often asked how ‘volunteering’ impacts the college admissions process:
Should a student volunteer?
Where should they volunteer?
What volunteer groups look better to a college admissions counselor?
There is no right or wrong answer a college admissions officer is looking for when it comes to where a student spends their time volunteering. It is not meant to be a chore a student endures just so they can list it on a college application. The intent is to learn more about the student, what interests them beyond the classroom, and see if they have a life beyond attending class, playing sports, or perfecting a talent like music or dance.
Volunteering gives a college a sneak peek into what that student will bring to a college campus. Will they be involved on campus? Will they be engaged with the local community outside of class? Will they represent the campus in the best possible light if given one of the admission spots?
When a student chooses to support a cause that is important to them, their enthusiasm about the cause and opportunity to serve others they care about comes across as authentic and real on a college application and that is what a college admissions counselor is looking for – a chance to know the real student who will be interacting with their college community on a daily basis for the next four years.
And when students are ready to apply their new research tips to find out what volunteer opportunities are out there, VolunteerCrowd is a great source to find a variety of opportunities in the local area!
