A nice outfit for dress-up events or career fairs/interviews
Umbrella
Mini hammer and screwdriver
Hat
Sunglasses
Wallet
Credit card
ATM card
Cellphone charger
Beach bag with a lightweight towel, flip flops, and sunscreen for outdoor outings
Last but not least, check the student housing site for a checklist of any items the campus recommends for their particular housing needs.
PS If you have time to make a stop and pick up some of these items after you are done with the dorm set-up, your student and their roommates will probably be most appreciative:
Kleenex
Paper towels
Toilet paper
Hand soap
Case of water or favorite drinks
Basic snack items to get them through the first few days
